Migrate from OpenAI Prism Before It Shuts Down: Two Steps

OpenAI Prism shuts down on January 1, 2027. You can migrate from Prism to inscrive.io in two steps and a few minutes: export all your projects as one zip, then drop that zip into inscrive.io. Every project arrives with its files and folders, ready to compile.

How to migrate from Prism in two steps

  1. In Prism, click Open export settings, then Download zip.
  2. In inscrive.io, click Import from Prism, drop the zip in and click Import.

Then open any project and press Compile.

Step 1: Export your projects from Prism

Open Prism and click Open export settings in the banner at the top.

The shutdown banner sits at the top of your Prism projects page.

Settings opens on Data Controls. Click Download zip next to Export all projects (zip).

This downloads one zip with every project inside.

Don’t see the banner? Open Settings from your user or workspace menu and go to Data Controls.

There’s no need to unzip the file. To grab a single project, including one shared with you, choose Export (zip) from the project’s title menu.

Step 2: Import them into inscrive.io

Sign in to inscrive.io, go to Projects and click Import from Prism.

You'll find the button at the top of your projects list.

Drop your zip into the window, or click to pick it from your computer. Each project appears in a list. Click Import to bring them all in.

inscrive.io creates the projects one after another and shows an Open link as each one is ready. Folders, figures, .bib files and class files all come along, and the main file is picked for you.

The Free plan holds 10 projects, and Pro has no limit if you’re bringing more.

Compiling your projects

Open a project and press Compile. inscrive.io runs the full TeX Live 2026 and picks pdfLaTeX, XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX from your preamble. If a project needs a particular engine, choose it in the project settings under LaTeX engine, or put this on the first line of your main file:

% !TEX program = xelatex

Bring your co-authors and references

Prism’s export holds your project files. According to OpenAI, project history, inline comments, collaborator permissions and the live Zotero connection stay behind, so these two take a moment to set up again:

  • Co-authors: open a project, click Share and add them by email. Collaborators are unlimited on every plan, Free included.
  • Zotero or Mendeley: your .bib file keeps working as it is. To keep it in sync, connect your library under Settings and add it to a project with Add reference library. The Zotero guide shows the setup.

Some exports also hold your Prism chats as JSON files. inscrive.io leaves those out, so your projects stay clean.

Codex or an online editor?

OpenAI points Prism users to Codex, which works on the files in a folder on your computer. That suits some projects well. If you’d rather keep writing in the browser with your co-authors, an online LaTeX editor is the closer match.

Your documents are stored and compiled on our servers in the EU, we never train AI on your data, and your work is never locked in: any project downloads as a zip whenever you like. Our comparison of online LaTeX editors has the wider view if you’re still deciding.

Frequently asked questions

When does OpenAI Prism shut down?

Prism shuts down on January 1, 2027, according to the notice inside the app. OpenAI says all Prism data is deleted after the shutdown and cannot be recovered, so export your projects before that date.

How do I export all my Prism projects?

Click Open export settings in the banner at the top of Prism, or open Settings and go to Data Controls. Then click Download zip next to Export all projects (zip). You get one zip with every project inside.

Do I need to unzip the Prism export?

No. inscrive.io’s Import from Prism button takes the zip as it is and turns each folder inside it into its own project.

What isn’t included in the Prism export?

Project history, inline comments, collaborator permissions and the live Zotero connection stay behind, according to OpenAI. Your LaTeX files, figures and .bib files are all included. Some exports also hold your chats as JSON files, and inscrive.io leaves those out of the imported projects.

Is inscrive.io free?

inscrive.io is freemium. The Free plan costs nothing and needs no card, and it includes 10 projects, 60-second compiles, unlimited collaborators, Git and Zotero or Mendeley. Pro costs €7 a month or €70 a year, removes the project limit, raises the compile limit to 480 seconds and adds AI fixes for compile errors.

Prism and the Prism logo belong to OpenAI. inscrive.io isn’t affiliated with OpenAI.
